A few years ago I was reading a magazine on a business trip when I came across an article about Seth Casteel, the found of the "One Picture Saves a Life" movement whose mission is to provide shelter staff and volunteers with the resources to successfully groom and photograph shelter pets, helping give them the second chance they deserve. I thought "I would love to do that", tore out the article and tucked it away. Fast forward to the end of 2013 and the opportunity to take some time off subsequent to a corporate merger, and what's one of the first things I did? Yep, I found that article, went to the One Picture Saves a Life website, adsorbed everything written and promptly purchased the recommended lens (which I still shoot with today).
As my skills have developed and improved, so have the portraits of the animals in the care of the great staff at Coppell Animal Services and Adoption Center. It's very satisfying to catch that fantastic shot which shows the animal's personality and has people lining up at the door to adopt. I was really glad to see my images being used in the weekly Coppell Gazette "Pets of the Week" section - in color no less! Just another way we can help these great animals get adopted.
I love portrait photography, whether the subject is furry or not :o), but shelter photography is close to my heart. If you're interested in portraits of your family, you can contact me here, but just know that I'll have to schedule you around my shelter volunteer days.
